Joel 1:3
LUKE CALDWELL OF ESTERLYN
- Shares the Joy of Using the Talents God Gave Him

7Cubed:† Hi Luke.  Thanks for talking to us during this holiday season.  What a busy season it is too!  With so many things coming at you in life from all perspectives, how do you keep a solid focus on serving God?

LC:† I think that is always going to be the challenge in life. After high school I went to Bible College in Europe for a year. I didn’t know anybody. I had no distractions.  It really felt like I had a year in my life where it was just me and God. I am so thankful for that foundation and direction the Lord gave me during that season but when I came back home I realized it’s a lot harder when you are living life at the same time. I know for me if I am not in the word of God everyday and not spending that sincere time in prayer my mind is going to slip and actions will follow. I do believe it becomes easier to keep your focus on God when you truly realize this world has nothing to offer. To love God and to love others is where we will find fulfillment and where we know are life counts .

7Cubed:† What a powerful statement you made... "I do believe it becomes easier to keep your focus on God when you truly realize this world has nothing to offer."  We should all memorize that as our mottos.

While both of the following examples are legitimate and lovely in their own right, we are curious...do all of your song lyrics and themes come from your lives directly or have the people you met along the way and their stories served as inspiration?

LC:† Definitely both. I would say for the most part in my writing it is things I am feeling inside. It could be guilt or joy or just realizing how much I need love. I believe being honest about who you are and where you are at is something that most people can identify with. When it comes down to it we are really all very similar in how we feel and what we need.

7Cubed:† In what ways did God reveal to you that He wanted you to turn your musical talents into a career for Him to guide and use?

LC:†  More through circumstance then anything else. I never really wanted to be in a band or travel full time. It is a lot of work and really takes the right team to be able to do it successfully. Doors kept opening for us and honestly I just wanted to be faithful. It is a joy to be able to have the opportunity and we are excited about what the Lord has in store for us.

7Cubed:† We hear you loud and clear... be open to use the talents God has given you.  He gives us those talents and desires for a reason.  So, ultimately how has this journey into Esterlyn helped you to be drawn closer to Jesus?

LC:†  It has really expanded my faith and caused me to really rely on Him fully. There are no guarantees with this industry and you never know what tomorrow is going to bring.  I think living a life of faith is one of the greatest things you can do . It is so much fun to see what the Lord does next!

7Cubed:† Amen to that!  What has God revealed to you about Himself and about yourself that was a surprise to you in this experience?

LC:†  More than anything that He is faithful. God will never let us down. He loves us so much and when we are seeking Him and desiring to follow Him in this life we can have the confidence that He will take care of the rest.  I love the fact that He cares about our little lives.

7Cubed:†  Do you remember what it felt like to record in the studio for the very first time? How is it different now that you have a great deal of experience?

LC:†  That’s funny- yeah it is night and day. There is still so much to learn in the studio but that is what makes it so much fun. Definitely one of the best things about what I do is being able to create in the studio.

7Cubed:†  Luke, knowing you were at one time a youth pastor, what do you miss about that specific type of ministry?

LC:†  Honestly I miss being home and serving at my home church. I still get to talk to tons of youth on the road and hopefully be an encouragement to their lives but its always hard if your family isn’t by your side.

7Cubed:†  We understand that too.  Family keeps us grounded in a sense.  Obviously you didn't just leave that ministry behind altogether.  What did you take with you from that experience while embarking in the ventures of Esterlyn and touring?

LC:† The ability to teach God’s word and hopefully being led by the spirit in what we do. Our desire as a band is not to be cool and get everyone to love us and buy our t-shirts. Our desire is to minister to those who are hurting or those who just need to be reminded of God’s love for them. I think since we didn’t just start a band to do music it really helps us have a deeper perspective on why we are out on the road making music. We want to make a difference in people's lives. I believe that stems from serving in full time ministry.

7Cubed:†  What exciting plans do you have for 2010?

LC:†  A new label – a new  album- - lots of touring!

Esterlyn's newest work is called "Mending the Meaning" and the acoustic sound is calm and sweet and inspiring.  In fact their song "Sweet Love" opens up the mind to think of the sweetness of God. Think of Him daily and often to experience His sweetness in your life.

7Cubed eZine - Interview with Esterlyn's
            Lead Singer, Luke Caldwell

We have been thinking a lot about the word joy lately... hearing it in a lot of songs at Christmas time, which it is, will do that!  We think it is quite possible that all of us probably have a lot to learn about true joy.  Our interview this issue is with Luke Caldwell, lead singer of the band Esterlyn, and you will see he really opens his heart to show that the joy is in the reason he persists.  Joy can be indescribable but we feel Luke put it into words very elegantly.

We met him over a year ago at a concert as you will see in the photo below... that is Emmy with Luke (she is the main writer for our
Christian Music Blog).  That night it didn't take us long to see the pursuit of joy was prevalent in his life.  From how they got their band's name (read how on our blog) to how they share their music and message, it is apparent that they are a band in it for "the win"  - the winning of hearts for Christ.

We hope you enjoy this issue AND that you have a slow paced, joy filled, thankful holiday season!

Merry Christmas to all!

The Heart of 7Cubed

Have you noticed as many people shopping just to "get it done" as we have?  Shopping for our loved ones should be all about giving them a gift to celebrate their life during the season in which we remember the One who gave us ALL life.  It should be FUN!

Slowing your pace to appreciate the joy of this season so you don't wear yourself out before Christmas arrives is a good thing.  Are you focusing on the real reason for the holiday instead of all the running around?  It can easily become a rat race in the malls, but we try to step back and breathe and experience the true joy in the celebrating.
