ICON FOR HIRE
These musicians have gained a lot of fans in a relatively short period of time... "Off With Her Head" has had over 37,000 plays on their MySpace page. Although the song title probably brings a certain image to mind it really is metaphoric...
Your way to life has only showed me what a fool I am
It serves the purpose of confirming I remain condemned
And I will ever linger on the edge
Unless you hear me
Through the recognition of the source of peace to take the place of the struggles, they remind us to cry out "don't let go Savior". And their song "The Grey" has heart piercing lyrics thought by all of us in our own inner voice.
I should've known,
I should've known I didn't have a chance
You pull me in & keep me there & tell me what I need to hear
In your deepest pain
In your weakest hour
In you darkest night
You are lovely
They really put forth a mountain of diverse sounds and rhythmic changes that leave you wanting more. There is no doubt why this band has become so popular so quickly and continues to press on in faith that God will work through them.
GET TO KNOW THEM
7Cubed: Thanks for talking with us and our readers! We've heard you speak of your driving mission for your music, so what do you hope the most that listeners take away from your music when they hear it?
IforH: We really make it a point to make music that inspires and intrigues people, especially in the area of being proactive regarding the problems people face in life. We've seen so many people, including ourselves, become overwhelmed and distracted by personal problems and let that become a hindrance that keeps people from doing what they are supposed to do. We are constantly pushing ourselves to not fall into that, and although we screw it up every single day, we honestly believe that our efforts make a difference and inspire others to at least try. We are die-hard enemies of apathy.
7Cubed: How exactly did you come up with the name Icon for Hire and how does it apply to the world we live in today?
IforH: We were sitting in our living room, discussing what kind of a band we wanted to be, and how to communicate that through our name. We had been noticing a very prevalent trend in our city (and in ourselves, go figure!) of looking up to guitar gods and sports heroes and rock stars to a point of obsession, and we saw how unhealthy that was. We are not meant to worship other human beings and yet so many of us get into that habit. That being said, we decide to be opposed to such a culture while at the same time making an effort to work within the broken system. If kids were gonna look up to us, we might as well make it a point to live lives worth looking up to. Hence, Icon For Hire.
7Cubed: What bands/singers are you listening to on your music players right now to inspire you?
IforH: That is a good question, and one we have a hard time answering! We have some seriously diverse listening tastes-one of us is a hard-core Pantera fan, and another can't stop listening to Fall Out Boy. While it makes our writing session a little more time-consuming, we really wouldn't have it any other way, because we enjoy the music we are making as a result of our varied influences. That constant tension of hard rock and more modern pop-rock has created a very healthy dialogue within the band and we hope it shows through our songs.
7Cubed: What is the concept behind the song "Off with Her Head?"
IforH: Off With Her Head is about insecurity and accusation. I (Ariel) wrote it in a time in my life where I felt very unqualified to lead a generation much less a city full of scene kids! The song is an honest look at my struggles with overcoming people's judgments of me, and I hope it can help other people do the same.
7Cubed: What do you guys like to do in when you are not writing and performing to keep a solid focus on your vision?
IforH: We are all band junkies! We completely love being musicians and business partners. We run this band like a business so there is always a million things to do, whether its updating our online music sites (please check us out on MySpace (www.myspace.com/iconforhire, or on Facebook), researching publishing companies, or sending out press packages. We all hold down jobs at home and tour on the weekends, but we are hoping to be able to tour full time in the near future.
7Cubed: Is there a particular story behind the lyrics of the song "The Grey"?
IforH: Most definitely. Our guitarist, Shawn, was explaining to me how he was feeling more and more stuck in where he was at in life, the monotony of the day to day was really getting to him, and he didn't really know of a cure. He wasn't depressed or in deep emotional turmoil, just bored and lackadaisical and not sure of how to change that or if he even had the energy to. I could really relate to what he was saying and decided to base the song off of that. The bridge is my own personal story, the words -"In your deepest pain/in your weakest hour/in your darkest night/you are lovely"- were spoken to me when I was going through a lot at a much earlier time and have been really helpful to me. I wanted to share that same encouragement with our listeners and sort of recycle the hope that I had drawn from those truths when I first heard them.
7Cubed: Thanks for a great interview! Your insights will no doubt help listeners as well as other musicians. May God continue to bless your work!
IforH: Thank you guys for all you're doing for music and helping musicians connect with listeners!
